Multiple congratulations to famed maritime historian, Professor John B. Hattendorf ‘73, who was awarded the prestigious Doctor of Letters degree (D.Litt) by the University of Oxford at a ceremony in March 2016.

John is Chairman of the Maritime History Department and the Ernest J. King Chair of Maritime History at the US Naval War College in Newport, RI. He is also Director of the Naval War College Museum. John’s academic focus has been on the history of the Naval War College, its contribution to America’s role as a leading maritime power, and the part it played during the early history of the U.S. Navy.

John also recently received the Alfred Thayer Mahan Award for Literary Achievement and the Samuel Eliot Morison Award which recognizes a person whose public service has enhanced the image of the USS CONSTITUTION and who reflects the best of that great naval historian and sailor, Admiral Morison.
