It is with profound sadness that The North American Pembrokian has learned of the passing of Rev. John Platt, ’56, Emeritus Fellow, former College Chaplain, Tutor for Admissions, Dean of Degrees, Secretary and Treasurer of The College Society, College Historian, and Editor of the Pembroke College Record, among other roles he brilliantly and generously fulfilled.
Perhaps more important than any of these positions, however, John befriended literally hundreds of Pembroke students during his 50-year association with College, providing comfort to the homesick; encouragement to struggling scholars, spiritual nourishment to those in need, actual nourishment from the many dinners for hungry Pembrokians he and his wife Mavis hosted in their home, and support and a warm smile to all. If any single person exemplifies what is meant by “friendly” in “friendly Pembroke College”, it was John Platt.
