Gentle History of Pembroke College Masters Lodgings

Two new lavishly illustrated Pembroke College history booklets have recently been published affording Pembrokians fascinating insight into how the College came to be what it is today.

A Gentle History of The Master’s Lodgings, Pembroke College, Oxford”, by Tim Brindley and Brian Wilson, traces the history of this singular Pembroke building from its humble beginnings in the 16th century as Cardinal Wolsey’s almshouse to today’s stately Master’s Lodgings.

Pembroke College, Oxford Architectural History” by Clara Chivers and Lucy Walters, with additional research by Tim Brindley and Pembroke College Archivist Amanda Ingram, is a more general treatment, beginning with the founding of Broadgates Hall, Pembroke’s medieval predecessor, through College’s 20th century expansion into the North Quad and the Geoffrey Arthur Building, and on to the 21st century bridge across Brewer Street and the sparkling new Rokos Quad.

Illustrated HIstory Pembroke

Both booklets are beautifully illustrated with maps, archival and contemporary drawings, and photographs, and can be purchased from College or, in the case of the Architectural History, online from the Oxford University Shop.
