Two terrific Pembroke gatherings highlighted the 2018 Oxford University North American reunion in San Francisco April 6-7, 2018.
On Saturday, April 7, Master Lynne Brindley hosted a dinner for over 30 Pembrokians and friends at the historic Mark Hopkins Hotel atop San Francisco’s famed Nob Hill. Dame Lynne provided an update on Pembroke activities – academic, cultural, and athletic.
Lynne proudly reminded the gathering of Pembroke’s recent academic successes – most notably third place in the most recent Norrington Table.
Before dinner Pembroke College Foundation President Tom Herman presented retiring Strategic Development Director Andrew Seton with an engraved clock in gratitude for Andrew’s tireless, decade-long service to College and to the Foundation.
While Andrew will be formally retiring, he assured us that he will continue to be involved with College and will take on special assignments whenever asked.
After dinner, Pembroke Fellow Andy Orchard, Oxford University Professor of Anglo Saxon – the same Oxford Chair once held by Pembroke’s own J.R.R. Tolkien – regaled the group with a lively presentation on Tolkien and Pembroke. Andy’s Old English and Middle English pronunciation is impeccable!
Well-known San Francisco painter Jeremy Sutton ‘79 and his lovely wife and equally accomplished painter, Peggy Gyulai, hosted two dozen Pembrokians for brunch in their very cool, art-filled South San Francisco studio on Sunday, April 8. The sun finally broke through after days of torrential rain, allowing brunch guests to enjoy the view of the San Francisco hills and, in the distance, the Golden Gate from the Jeremy’s roof deck.
The concurrent all-Oxford reunion was also attended by hundreds of alumni from colleges across the University – and featured, among other presentations, talks by Andy Orchard on Tolkien’s Oxford; an interview of Los Angeles mayor (and potential 2020 presidential candidate) Eric Garcetti (Queens ’93) by LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman (Wolfson ’90); and a state-of-the-University presentation from Vice Chancellor Louise Richardson.
