As of February 25, 2026, your American passport alone is no longer sufficient documentation for entry into the UK.
Dual citizens are now required to present a valid British passport, an Irish passport, or a Certificate of Entitlement when travelling to the UK. Airlines have been instructed to deny boarding to dual nationals who do not meet the documentation requirements.
The good news is that sorting this out is straightforward — you simply need to decide which route works best for you:
1. Renew your British passport — the simplest path. Apply at gov.uk. It costs £94.50. Importantly, make sure to allow several weeks for processing.
2. Apply for a Certificate of Entitlement — this costs £589 and must be renewed with each new foreign passport issuance. If interested, search online for “Form ROA”.
Fellow Pembrokian (and esteemed PCFNA Treasurer) Neil Arnold brought this to our attention, as re-applying for a UK passport can be a bit onerous: “Pembrokians in the US, may have let their UK passport expire and travel only on a US passport. Under these new rules, they can’t enter the UK! “
Worth a quick check before your next trip back home to the UK.
