Pete Buttigieg ’05, mayor of South Bend, Indiana, his hometown, is running for president. On January 23, 2019, Pete announced the formation of an exploratory committee, the precursor to a formal declaration. Pete is one of a growing number of Democrats aiming for the 2020 presidential contest.
“There’s a new generation of voices emerging in our country, walking away from the politics of the past and ready to deliver on our priorities,” Pete said in a video announcement. “There is no ‘again’ in the real world; that’s not a bad thing. We are ready for a fresh start.”
Pete came to Pembroke as a Rhodes Scholar after graduating from Harvard.
Pete is the second Pembrokian to make a presidential bid in recent years – Sen. Dick Lugar ’54 (now Chairman of the Pembroke College Foundation) ran in the Republican primaries in 1996.
