Master Lynne Brindley has announced she will step down at the end of the 2019-2020 academic year. Lynne has served as Pembroke’s Master since 2013. She is Pembroke’s first female Master in its nearly 400-year history. Prior to coming to Pembroke, Lynne served as Chief Executive of the British Library.

Lynne has been a great supporter of the work of the Pembroke College Foundation. “We will miss Lynn enormously,” said Tom Herman, president of the Foundation. “She has been an extraordinary partner in working to strengthen the ties of the College to its North American Community. Her contributions to Pembroke will certainly endure for decades and beyond.”

Lynne’s note announcing her retirement is printed in full below:

A Message from the Master

I am writing to let you know that I have decided to step down from the office of Master of Pembroke in Spring 2020.  By then I will have enjoyed almost seven rewarding years as Master, and it has been an enormous privilege to serve College in this way.  There is never an ideal time to step down, but my retirement will allow a successor to lead the College in its further preparations for, and celebration of, its 400th anniversary in 2024.  The Vicegerent, Owen Darbishire, and Governing Body have now begun discussions about the process for identifying my successor.

Meanwhile I am still hugely enjoying the role and remain fully committed to the College and the University. There remains much to do and much to achieve and celebrate between now and Spring 2020.  My commitment to Pembroke’s ambitious academic agenda, our long-term plan and our fundraising needs will continue and I look forward to sharing many more successes together.

With thanks for your support and friendship,

Lynne
